Advanced Throwing

This course builds on the skills of the Introduction to Pottery courses with emphasis on the core skill of throwing: transforming the clay into a finished form using the wheel and other tools and techniques.

The finished results will be more complex, and students will bring their own projects to work in the later stages of the course.

12-Week Course Programme

topics covered:

  • Refining the cylinder

  • Refining the bowl

  • making moon jars

  • dry throwing

  • altering thrown forms

  • glazing

  • more focus on project work

  • making joined forms

Each class will commence with preparing sufficient clay for the session, followed by a demonstration by the tutor. The students will then have supervised wheel practice. The final 15 mins will be cleaning up the wheel, the tools, the floor, mirror and work surfaces.

This is a practical hands on course in which the student will develop confidence using the potters wheel with close supervision from a tutor who is an experienced thrower.

All materials are provided for these courses, except for a £10 per kilo charge for firing, including bisque and glaze firings. Please note that this charge may increase due to rising electricity costs.

According to your own particular project, you may need extra clay, which can be purchased at the studio as required.
