with John Murphy-Woolford

This is a great class and so interesting in that you get under the skin of the artists. It has certainly opened my eyes to abstract art.

What does abstract art mean? How do you make it?

Many abstract artists choose to work this way because they don’t want to be restricted to copying  appearances. They want something else. There are many different ideas about how to make an abstract paintings and why it is important

Lesson summary

A slide presentation introduces the context of the lesson, with examples of paintings illustrating a particular approach, school or subject. Students are then set a painting challenge or task in order to engage with the approach of the lesson and the tutor will circulate and partner with each student, discussing what has been made, the direction the student wishes to travel and ways to reach their goals.

What Students will Learn:

Students will be introduced to the broad range of approaches employed in abstract picture making and how to use these. They will learn how to start an abstract painting, develop a visual language, problem-solve unresolved paintings, develop a critical eye to assess their work and see how their own paintings fit into the wider history of abstract painting. In addition, their encounters with abstract paintings in galleries and museums will be enhanced in knowledge and appreciation.
